Why Your AC is Running But Not Cooling: Common Causes & Fixes

Is your air conditioner running but not cooling your home? You're not alone—this is one of the most common service calls we get at Field Industries during the hot summer months in Clifton Park and the Capital Region. When your AC is blowing warm air, it's frustrating—and it could be costing you money.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Might Be Off

It sounds simple, but the first place to check is your thermostat.

  • Double-check that it’s set to “cool,” not just “on” or “fan.”

  • Lower the set temperature to trigger cooling.

If the fan is running but no cold air is coming out, it’s time to dig deeper.

2. Dirty Air Filter

A clogged air filter can block airflow, causing your system to run inefficiently or freeze up entirely.

You should replace your HVAC air filter every 1–3 months—especially during peak summer use.

3. Frozen Evaporator Coils

When airflow is restricted or refrigerant is low, your AC coils can freeze—literally turning your system into a block of ice.

Signs:

  • Weak airflow

  • Ice visible on the outdoor unit or refrigerant line

  • AC runs constantly without cooling

Do NOT keep running your AC if you suspect a freeze-up. Shut it off and call a professional.

4. Refrigerant Leak

Low refrigerant = no cool air.

Refrigerant issues can’t be fixed with a DIY refill. It’s a closed system and requires certified HVAC technicians to:

  • Locate the leak

  • Repair the lines

  • Recharge the system properly

5. Outdoor Unit Issues

If your condenser unit outside is blocked, dirty, or the fan isn’t spinning, heat can’t escape from your home.

DIY Step:

  • Remove debris (leaves, grass clippings, etc.)

  • Spray down the coils gently with a hose

  • Check the circuit breaker

If the unit won’t turn on, call Field Industries LLC for an inspection.

6. Faulty Compressor or Capacitor

If your system hums but doesn’t cool, it could be a failing compressor or capacitor—both of which require professional HVAC service.

These are common in older systems and may indicate it’s time to start considering an upgrade.

7. Your System Is Too Old

If your AC is more than 12–15 years old and having trouble keeping up, it may not be worth another repair. Older systems are less efficient and more prone to breakdowns.

Let our team evaluate your current system and provide honest recommendations for repair vs. replacement.

What You Can Do Right Now

  • Check and change your air filter

  • Make sure your thermostat is set to “cool”

  • Clear debris from your outdoor unit

  • Schedule a professional inspection if your system still isn’t cooling
